Department of Mining and Geology was formerly known as Department of Geology. Before its formation as a separate entity in the year 1946, it was a part of Industries Department. In 1970, Department of Geology was reorganized and was renamed as Department of Mining and Geology.

This Department is the statutory body under Industries Department of Government of Kerala for mineral exploration, prospecting, and administration. In addition, the Department carries out short-term investigations/studies as per the directives of State Government. The Department, being a scientific organization, also undertakes geosciences projects sponsored by agencies like Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.
